The bacteria in your mouth are tenacious. They rarely miss an opportunity to exploit a chipped or otherwise weakened area of tooth enamel. Once they invade the area, the cavity will gradually continue to spread. This is even more likely to be an issue if you struggle to maintain good oral hygiene habits or if you have a bad habit of skipping your routine dental exams at Signature Smiles.

If too much of the tooth enamel has been compromised to viably apply a filling, Dr. might recommend treating the tooth with a dental crown.

This restoration method commonly takes two separate appointments. At the first session, your dentist will numb the area with Novocain before using a drill to remove all the tooth enamel. This leaves behind an abutment containing the healthy dentin, pulp and root of the tooth.

Our team will then help create a detailed impression of the area to serve as a guide for our off-site dental lab technicians while they prepare your final crown. At the end of the appointment, your dentist will secure a temporary crown over the abutment to protect it.

Once the crown is completed, we will call you back in to have it cemented in place. With consistent oral hygiene habits, your new crown should restore the function and appearance of your tooth for many years to come.
